Pistachio and the Worms

Hamming it up as the villain, Garbage on Astoria’s 31st Avenue Open Street for Earth Day. Photo by Jude Prager.

I directed and performed in Emilie Gay’s Pistachio + the Worms, a bilingual children’s play in English and Spanish that teaches kids how to compost, filled with silly songs and garbage monsters (me). Commissioned as a NYC Department of Transportation Public Space Programmer, we performed with a rotating cast and crew for Earth Day and children’s education at three locations: Astoria’s 31st Avenue Open Street, Flatbush Development Corporation’s Open Streets, and PS Family NYC Early Childhood Education Center. I could write a thousand words about this play, and how children’s theater is a form of radical, critical pedagogy in pursuit of climate liberation, public space reclamation, and resolute joy, but you’ll have to look through these photos. Watch out, Sesame Street!
